What Kind of Learning Do We Value?

Human beings are creatures of habit. Habits are comfortable, and it is generally easier to continue doing things the way they have always been done. But at Acorn Montessori School, we believe in the importance of examining those habits periodically. Change can be messy and challenging, yet it is where growth begins.

We often ask ourselves: “Why are things done this way?” and “Does our daily rhythm truly align with our mission?” As a school that provides a nurturing environment to foster independent, confident, and compassionate learners, we think it’s vital to ensure our actions match the values we model for our students.

Defining Learning vs. Education

To understand why we do what we do, we have to look at the definitions:

  • Learning: The act or experience of acquiring knowledge or skill through experience and study.
  • Education: The field of study dealing with methods of teaching and learning in schools.

Historically, the goal of education was to prepare children for a specific workforce. While the world has changed drastically, many conventional systems still reflect those old needs. At Acorn, we believe education should prepare children for life, not just a job.

Our Core Values

What do we consider important? At Acorn, our model is built on a triangle involving the child, the adult, and the prepared environment. This structure allows us to live out our most important values:

  • Individuality: Honoring each child’s unique pace and talents.
  • Environmental Stewardship: Cultivating respect for the earth on our beautiful five-acre wooded campus.
  • Empathy: Nurturing a society based on deep respect for others.
  • Innovation & Truth: Teaching children how to find high-quality information and think critically.

What Do We Hope Our Children Will Gain?

If children spend the bulk of their waking hours at school, that time must be meaningful.

Instead of asking a room full of children to progress at the same pace, we utilize a system where students progress as they master specific skills. Whether it’s a toddler finding independence in their movements or an elementary student collaborating on a complex project, we prioritize intrinsic motivation over predetermined, rigid courses.

We ask: Do we want to administer extensive amounts of memorization, or do we want to ensure children have the skills to pursue their own interests?

Does the System Reflect the Goal?

Our approach is intentionally different from conventional schooling. While the world is beginning to see the value in shifting away from rigid approaches, Montessori is ready to tackle these challenges right now.

  • We honor the individual: Every child deserves to be heard and respected.
  • We embrace different paces: We recognize that interests and needs vary by child.
  • We balance solitude and cooperation: Our classrooms provide space for both deep focus and collaborative social development.
  • We foster joy: We want children to regard their education as a foundation of exploration that carries them throughout their lives.

We hope this gives you a moment to pause and consider what you value for your child's future.
