Creating Community in our Montessori Toddler Environments

What Is Community?

The word community comes from the Latin communis, meaning “shared by all.” In our Toddler program (serving children from the time they are walking independently through 36 months), community is more than just a shared space. It is a shared sense of meaning, values, and connection. This begins with the family—a child’s first social experience. At Acorn, we see ourselves as partners with you. Our goal is a mutual journey where the adults at school and the adults at home come together with one purpose: to nurture your child’s natural growth.

Building the Acorn Toddler Community

We design our learning environments at our Lebanon, NJ campus—both indoors and outdoors—to meet each child exactly where they are.

  • The People: Our lead guides and trained assistants focus on being a "calm presence." Their role is not to direct the child’s every move, but to support their development with peace and purpose.
  • The Space: A toddler’s world must be "just right." If a room is too large, a child feels lost; if it is too small, they feel unsettled. Every piece of furniture at Acorn is intentionally sized so that a toddler can sit, work, and move without needing an adult to lift them.
  • The Materials: Everything on our shelves is purposeful and beautiful. From baskets for matching objects to small pitchers for pouring, these materials support the toddler’s "Sensitive Period" for order and movement.

The Power of "Profound Order"

A true Montessori community relies on an invisible but essential structure: Order. Toddlers have a fundamental need for external order—routines, consistent expectations, and a well-organized space. This external order helps them form inner order, which is the foundation for emotional regulation and autonomy. When a child knows exactly where their shoes go and exactly what happens after snack time, they feel safe enough to explore and learn.

The Role of the Prepared Adult

As Guides, we recognize that while we maintain the environment, it truly belongs to the children. We practice the art of scientific observation, which allows us to identify exactly what a child needs next to aid their growth. We also practice humility. We recognize that toddlers are often more in tune with their needs than we realize. Our work requires us to respect each child’s potential, even when behavior is challenging, and to love them unconditionally for exactly who they are today.

A Living, Breathing Community

Creating a Montessori community for toddlers is both an art and a science. It is a shared space where our youngest students first experience what it means to belong, to contribute, and to grow alongside others. In the Acorn Toddler Community, children aren't just "in childcare"—they are learning how to be in the world, together.
